Recording your session: the technical stuff


This should answer any questions you may have about the tech side of presenting at Pause and describes what we’d like you to do to help us record the sessions. Please read through this once now, in case you need to get any equipment together you might not have expected (adapters, USB drives, etc.). If you have ANY questions, please feel free to post them to the wiki or to email John, Ernest, or Molly.

The Room

There will be an LCD TV or a projector in the room when you arrive, along with a cable running from the TV. Please present using the TV if at all possible. This will let us keep the lights up so people can see each other when they talk. It will also make you look better in the recordings.

The TVs use HDMI input and we'll have DVI to HDMI cables in the rooms which have TVs. So if you have something other than that on your machine, like MicroDVI, please bring adapters bring all the adapters you own. The projectors use a mix of VGA and DVI so again, please be responsible for any adapters your laptop might require.

Note: switch your display to 1024 x 768 before plugging your machine into the TVs. Then you can change your display to one of the TV resolutions listed (towards the top of the resolution list and showing a little TV icon).

In three of the main rooms there will be a small HD video camera on a tripod: please assign someone from the audience to run the camera during the presentation. Folks will be expecting the assignment as we’ll have emailed them about this ahead of time. You'll see instructions for operating the camera on the table where you present: please give a copy to the person running your camera.

There is free wifi at the Ace.

Recording Your Screen

If you're presenting from your laptop it will be your responsibility to record your own screen. You can do this using Screenflow for the Mac, the Quicktime built into Snow Leopard, or Camtasia for Mac or Windows. Details about all that software follow below.

Please make sure you record an audio track along with your screen: without any audio track we won't be able to synch the video of your screen with the camera's video in post.

When the session is over you'll need to get us your recording before you leave the room. Please place your recording on a USB thumb drive (there will be an envelope of blank drives in the room), place it in one of the blank envelopers provided, seal it and write your name and your session name on the outside. Then leave the envelope in the room for us. This is the same envelope into which you'll place the SD card from the camera's recording. If you camera records to tape; don't worry about that: we'll collect the tapes at the end of the day.

Please take a moment to record your practice sessions so the recording software doesn’t get in the way of your enjoyment of the session. Even though your session shouldn’t be a lecture, recording two practice conversations will make the real thing run much more smoothly.

Final Thoughts

While we're really making an effort to make these recordings professional and easy to watch, the experience *at* Pause has to come first. That is one of the central traits of Pause: content first. Close to that would be "intimacy" and "access". One of the reasons we started all this was to get more face time with people we really wanted to spend time with: we don't want recording to get in the way of that either and I think we have a plan that gets recording done without too much disruption.

We're making all this effort around recording, and we're willing to tolerate some disruption, because it is true to the idea of foregrounding content, true to the idea that Pause is about access, and if we do it right, shows FileMaker that they need to get off their ass and record DevCon sessions. I also like it because it frees me to chat with someone in the hall without feeling I have to spend 15 minutes in each session to see it all.

Your session content is key to Pause. Talk about things you're passionate about-- things you're unsure of and interested in--and this will be a huge success. Please take the time to make these recordings happen and you'll have a great record of this event, and you'll be able to catch up on some of the cool sessions you missed.


You don’t have to record your session, even if you're in a recording suite, but we hope you will. By recording your session your grant Pause, and Pause attendees as individuals, the nonexclusive right to distribute the recording(s) under a Creative Commons license. You can find that license here:

Screen Recording Software


Mac only:
ScreenFlow is the jam and is what SeedCode uses to record all their videos. It is very easy to use and a great investment if you want to send, short new-feature movies to your clients. When recording it will ask if you want to record your screen and which audio source to use: select your machine’s internal mic. Remember, we need that audio track for syncing.


Mac and Windows:
They have a generous 30 day trial with no watermarks. Once you’re done re- cording export to the Quicktime format: select Share / Advanced Export to find the quicktime option. Again, please practice recording ahead of time and make sure you’re getting an audio track in there. We had some folks in PDX have real trouble with this, so make sure you do a few practice recordings so your not fighting with this software when you'd rather be listening to your audience.


Save the output as a .mov and make sure it is picking up your audio.

QuickTime in Snow Leopard

Mac only:
The new version of Quicktime built into Snow Leopard has pretty great recording capability. Select File / New Screen Recording and you’ll see the small screen recording window below. Add an audio track (we really need this) by clicking on the little triangle and selecting “Built-in Microphone”. The movie will be automatically saved to your movies folder when you stop recording (don’t forget to stop recording).
